We take a unique “triage” approach to helping those who seek us out.
We don’t bandaid the issue with a single answer or 1-800 number.
We “fill the gap” that other organizations simply aren’t able to do right now.
Stop Soldier Suicide was founded and is led by ex- and active-duty military. We have a personal understanding of what our brothers and sisters are going through. The red tape, the fears, the combat, the deployments, the “coming home.” And as such, we know the problems and issues are too complex to be helped with a single answer. It might be a financial, housing, relationship, job or substance abuse issue driving feelings of overwhelment or depression. It could be physical issues of PTS, TBI, loss of limb or paralysis.
Our three-pronged approach means every individual gets the right help and care for their situation. Once we raise the needed funding, we will open a fully staffed Contact Center. This Center will be an all-voluntary, active-duty and Veteran-staffed assistance program.
STOP SOLIDER SUICIDE TRIAGE MODEL OF CARE:
1. Initial Contact
Active and Veteran service members contact us through a local chapter, our Facebook page, a 24-hour hotline (via our Contact Center coming soon) or other partner organizations.
2. Assess & “Triage”
Our fulltime staff will assess the urgency of the care needed and determine the right course to take and who can best help the Soldier or Veteran once we’ve determined the catalyst or trigger for the suicidal feelings.
3. Transition & Followup
“Clients” are connected to mental health professionals, local chapter support or/and partner organizations that can provide care. For instance, we have a dedicated line with the VA that means if someone who calls us is in crisis, we can call the dedicated number, be on the line with the person, and help the VA counselor understand the situation. Our staff will also follow up with everyone who reaches out to us, taking full accountability for continued support.
